Proof of god's existence, your stupidity

Peter Jensen, Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, preaching at St Andrew's Cathedral on Christmas day, acknowledges the critics:

People ask us where God is, why they can't see God, and if it is true, we should be able to know it is true.
But he has an answer:
The Christmas story tells us that it is true.

This man’s standard of evidence is not very high.

There was a point in history where God became flesh. Those who were with him saw him, talked to him, lived with him and in the end crucified him.
No. There as a point in history where an egomaniac’s claims that he was god were taken seriously. A few wrote about it, and now millions of people take these claims seriously.
The son of God, Jesus, showed us exactly what God is like.
A delusional hippie with a penchant for party tricks.
Our problem with God is not that he is invisible or that he does not exist. The real problem is that we wish that he did not exist.
The success of religion in modern times is a testament to the fact that people do wish that god exists.

Jensen’s real problem is because god is invisible, and doesn’t exist, his church is dying. And blaming people for being unable to believe in a sky fairy will do nothing to slow it.

There's probably more to it than that--churches have survived for millennia in spite of god's invisibility. The fact that his conservative views on gender and sexuality are so out of step with contemporary Australia might explain the decline.

The millennia they survived for, we didn't have such things as "science" to offer a contrary explanation.

And when we did, the church tried to suppress it.

See here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copernicus

In 1616, in connection with the Galileo affair, the Roman Catholic Church's Congregation of the Index suspended De revolutionibus until it could be "corrected," on the grounds that the Pythagorean doctrine that the Earth revolved about an immobile Sun was "false and altogether opposed to Holy Scripture."

Copernicus' book was censored by the church, and Galileo was kept under house arrest for the rest of his life by the inquisition.

You see the sad thing is that the church knows there is no god. They just don't want the masses to know, because that would destroy their power.

Actually Sydney Anglicanism, of which Jensen is the Archbishop, is growing.

By his church I was refering to Anglicanism in Australia, adherence to which has fallen steadily since 1921 according to census figures.

But broader Anglican decline is scarcely a surprise to Sydney Anglicans. They would say the wider church is declining precisely because it has abandoned biblical beliefs (in terms of both doctrines and morals), and they would cite in support of this the fact that Sydney's churches have grown, while the other Anglican churches in Australia have generally declined. Indeed, this assessment of the position is absolutely basic to Sydney Anglican identity.

You may disagree with the Sydney Anglicans, but to try to disconcert them by throwing church decline statistics in their faces is not going to have much of an impact.

If is the case, why is religion declining generally in Australia? Why are Australian abandoning biblical beliefs and religious morality?
